Independence Day at Vega

4th of July at Summer CampHappy 4th of July,

Vega was overrun with Red, White and Blue yesterday.  The girls got to dress in red, white and blue, the dining hall was decorated in red, white and blue and we ate red, white and blue pancakes!  After breakfast the Olympic generals began the Independence Day flag raising ceremony followed by the Echoes serenading us with patriotic songs.

The main event of the morning was the Great American Egg Toss, which was egg-cellent!  Everyone’s eggs were flying at one point – some farther than others.  After the egg toss we has our annual barbecue lunch with corn on the cob, watermelon and Varna (our camp tooth fairy) enhanced the celebration by giving everyone a Varna Bar.  The weather was perfect for the waterfront afternoon – high 70s, party cloudy and the waterski boats were towing group after group through the lake for the camp favorite past time of tubing.

Then the girls got ready for their first cookout of the summer.  The staff members gathered the cookout baskets at Tee-Pee near the dining hall and the girls helped build fires and cook hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and more on the open fire.  If you haven’t tasted a hamburger cooked on the open fire with wood gathered from the forest, you should put it on your list of things to do!  Afterwards, the girls got ready for the fireworks by attending the ice-cream Sundae Bar.

When the bell rang we gathered at the beach and Kyle put the flare to the first round of fireworks and “BOOM”!  The show was spectacular and we are looking forward to showing you the footage from throughout the day as soon as possible!

Stay posted for our first Olympic Update, which is going on this afternoon!
