New Year, New Field House: The Power of Tradition and the Importance of Change

Happy New Year – yeah, Vega 2016!  We are always thinking about camp, and as every holiday passes we know we are getting closer to seeing and hearing all the girls and staff back for another incredible summer.  As we look forward to the 2016 season, we remember previous summers, especially the people who were a part of them, and reflect upon how we can bring the lessons and magic of the past to preserve and enhance the future.

This connection to the past is part of what makes Vega so special, and is how so many cherished traditions endure through the years.  We work very hard to protect and continue these traditions, from songs and activities, to physical places at camp.  Vega’s traditions create a link between the summers, and form a bond between all those who have ever spent a summer on Echo Lake, regardless of when.  It is part of what allows those of us in the Vega community to belong to something greater than ourselves.  The meaning of those shared traditions in the hearts and minds of people spanning several generations is incredibly powerful.

And still, every summer brings many new and wonderful things: new campers, new staff, new experiences, and new ideas.  With those changes, Vega becomes greater than before. And in the case of 2016, a new building.  A BIG new building.  In case you didn’t know, the New Year is bringing a new Field House to Vega!

Vega is so fortunate to have a maintenance staff with the knowledge and skill to construct this themselves.  The guys have been extremely busy up at camp getting this building where it is today, and they are making quite a bit of progress.  Department heads have been reaching out to us throughout the year to schedule time for some of their events in The Field House, which will have plenty of space for everyone in camp.  Don’t worry, there will still be many “3 Scoots Up” chants in the Lodge as well!  You can see more pictures from all phases of the construction thus far in the photo album on our Facebook page.

2016 has also brought new roofs to all of the White House and Boothbay, including the Dance Studio, Tee-Pee, Music Studio, and Dining Hall.

On another note, keep an eye out for the 2016 Camp Spot catalogs, which we hope will be in the mail in the next week or so.  We will also be activating forms and information on Camp in Touch in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Here’s to a Happy, Healthy, Fun and Magical 2016!
